5 Oils You Should be Eating

Healthy oil for ayurvedic diet

1. Olive Oil:

Olive oil has long been praised for its antioxidants and heart healthy properties, however many people are unaware of its low smoke point. Using olive oil in salad dressings and marinades is great, but employing it when cooking with a frying pan or in the oven at high temperatures can lead to the oil becoming carcinogenic.

2. Flaxseed Oil:

Flaxseed oil is loaded with omega-3’s and fiber, and gives food a wonderful nutty flavor. Studies have shown that flaxseed can actually alleviate inflamed intestines, making it a great choice for those with Colitis or Crohn’s Disease. Flaxseed Oil is also known to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower blood pressure.

3. Avocado Oil:

With an exceptionally high smoke point of 500 degrees, avocado oil proves to be extremely versatile for all methods of cooking. Delicious on a salad and perfect for grilling, this slightly nutty, buttery oil is full of fatty acid and antioxidants that are great for your health and for your hair and skin.

4. Coconut Oil:

Considered to be the new "miracle product" in today's market, coconut oil has been used in tropical cultures for centuries. It's ability to promote thyroid health is even thought to be the reason why these tropical cultures often lack Western diseases. Coconut oil is composed of almost 50% lauric acid, helping you to feel satisfied after eating, as well as stimulating the thyroid function to assist in weight loss. With a high smoke point and a unique flavor, add coconut oil to your diet as a great choice for baking, frying and grilling.

5. Sesame Oil:

A rich source of antioxidants, zinc, calcium, fiber, magnesium, and copper, sesame oil's anti-inflammatory qualities aid in ailments related to blood pressure, heart health, and diabetes. Its strong, distinct flavor, is often associated with Asian cuisine, but it can be used in any sauce or dressing. With a moderate smoke point, sesame oil is also a safe choice or sautéing or frying.

Despite the many health benefits of these five products, not all oils are created equally. Avoid canola oil and vegetable oil as they often contain chemicals and pesticides from manufacturing. Remember, as with anything, all oils should be taken in moderation as to guarantee positive effects on your health.
